Emotion Focused Therapy

 
 

Emotion Focused Therapy is all about the emotions! Research has shown that if we can understand and experience our emotions in a helpful way we can also understand our needs and relate differently to ourselves and others.

I’ve trained under Leslie Greenberg, the founder of EFT and I’m certified in it. In EFT the focus is to help the client experience emotions that are helpful and can guide them towards their needs. Some emotions have stopped being helpful for us in certain settings and these emotions might lead to emotional suffering or pain. EFT views emotions as something fundamentally helpful but through different life experiences some emotions might have become maladaptive for us.

One thing that differ EFT from other methods is that the client is guided to experience emotions as a way of changing them and understanding them differently. The work is based in both identifying, experiencing, exploring, accepting, understanding and managing emotions. EFT is a method where several strategies are based in experiencing emotions in a safe space in order to alter how we relate to them and most clients finds this to be a very helpful and emotionally altering experience.

Working with EFT as a method has definitely been eye opening for me. Since part of the active mechanisms in EFT is experiential, meaning that the clients are guided to experience emotions in session, change can feel strong at times. I find the method of EFT efficient to work with since it brings a framework of understanding to the sessions and can provide the clients with new experiences that might change the way they relate.

As in all the methods I work with we will start with talking about you individual goals and preferences for therapy method. I will give you suggestions based in what themes we’ll decide to work with. The first sessions we will explore goals and your life history, both when it comes to relations, work, interest, family history but also more practical parts of life that affects us such as daily routines.
